Editorial Standards
Purpose of the Catalogue
The UQAWE Public Domain Literature Library provides editorial notes that help readers navigate and understand public-domain texts. The catalogue is designed to support independent reading, not to replace original works or serve as a scholarly apparatus.
Scope and Selection
The library currently contains 99 English-language texts from Project Gutenberg, all in the public domain. Selection prioritizes works with clear political, historical, or philosophical content relevant to the category Government. No works are commissioned; all are pre-existing public-domain editions.
Source Attribution
Every book record identifies Project Gutenberg as the source. Original publisher information, where available, is included in the bibliographic data. The catalogue does not alter or re-license the underlying texts.
Bibliographic Records
Each record contains title, author(s), publisher, keywords, target-reader field, and a catalogue note. The keywords are supplied by the source and may include Library of Congress subject headings. The catalogue note is written by the editor and reflects informed reading, not peer review.
Category Assignment
Works are assigned to a single category based on their predominant theme. The category Government encompasses texts on political theory, constitutional history, governance, diplomacy, and related subjects. Assignment is performed by the editor after reviewing each work.
Editorial Reading Context
Catalogue notes are prepared by Jane Fitzgerald, Catalogue Editor, based on her reading of the texts. Notes focus on structure, rhetorical strategies, and thematic patterns rather than offering comprehensive literary criticism. They are intended to orient readers, not to exhaustively analyze.
Edition Facts and Text Measurements
Where available, edition facts such as translator, illustrator, or annotator are included. Some catalogue notes reference word counts or structural divisions (e.g., number of chapters, sections) when those features are significant for navigation.
Recommendations and Related Works
Each category guide includes three recommended books with concrete reasons drawn from the catalogue notes. The recommendations are editorial suggestions, not endorsements. Related works are not systematically cross-referenced, but notes may mention other titles in the library when appropriate.
Corrections and Reader Reports
Readers may report errors or suggest improvements by contacting the editor at editor@uqawe.com. The catalogue is reviewed periodically, but no formal correction schedule is maintained. Corrections are applied at the editor's discretion.
Public-Domain Limitations
All texts are confirmed to be in the public domain under applicable laws. The catalogue does not guarantee copyright status for every jurisdiction. Users are responsible for verifying public-domain status in their location.
Accessibility and Readable Presentation
Pages use semantic HTML and avoid inline styles, scripts, or images. Content is structured with headings, lists, and paragraphs for screen-reader compatibility. The design prioritizes readability over visual decoration.
Independence and Editorial Responsibility
The catalogue is edited independently by Jane Fitzgerald in New Zealand. No external funding, sponsorship, or institutional affiliation influences content. The editor exercises sole discretion over selection and annotation.
What the Catalogue Does Not Claim
The catalogue does not claim peer review, legal certification, librarian credentials, or guaranteed completeness. It does not represent itself as a scholarly edition or as a substitute for reading the original texts. The editor is not affiliated with Project Gutenberg or any university.
Ongoing Maintenance
The library is updated infrequently. New titles may be added if suitable public-domain works become available. Existing catalogue notes may be revised without notice. The editorial standards document is versioned and dated.
